Most removers added a sustainability page to an existing business. We started from the waste and worked backwards to the company.
The three structural problems
Removals wastes a great deal, and almost none of it is anybody behaving badly. It is three incentives pointing the wrong way.
Packaging is sold, not lent. A remover who sells you boxes has no reason to take them back. So you buy cardboard, use it once, and spend a Saturday at the recycling centre.
Dedicated vehicles are easier to sell than shared ones. "Your own van, your own date" is a simpler pitch than a delivery window, so half-empty vehicles run the motorway network carrying air.
Surplus furniture is the customer's problem. It sits outside the quote, so nobody addresses it until the last day — and on the last day, the only available answer is a skip.
What we changed
Crates are lent and collected, which makes the packaging our asset rather than your disposal problem. Loads are consolidated wherever the dates allow, and we say plainly when they can't be. And the survey covers what isn't coming as well as what is, early enough that a reuse route is still bookable.
None of that is technically difficult. It's just a different set of defaults, and defaults are what actually determine outcomes.
What we won't do
We won't tell you we're carbon neutral, because we aren't and the claim would rest on offsets we haven't bought. We won't quote a percentage saved, because we can't substantiate one for your particular move. We won't display accreditations we haven't earned. And we won't promise a charity will take your sofa, because reuse organisations set their own rules and those rules change.
That list costs us work. We'd rather lose a job than make a claim we couldn't evidence if you asked. The full version is here.
How we'd like to be judged
Not on the language. On whether the crates turned up when we said, whether anything broke, whether the inventory matched at the other end, and whether the pile of things you weren't taking actually went somewhere better than landfill — with paperwork to show it.
Those are checkable. Most of what the industry says about sustainability is not, which is precisely why we've written this page without any.
